Hail can cosmetically dent a metal roof. The roof keeps working, since dents in standing seam almost never leak, but it can look hail struck for the rest of its life.

Heavier gauge and standing seam profiles hide denting better than thin smooth panels. And read how your carrier treats cosmetic damage on metal, because many Texas policies carry a cosmetic damage exclusion that applies to metal in particular. If a contractor tells you metal is hail proof, they have not worked in North Texas.

Standing Seam Against Exposed Fastener

For a house we recommend standing seam. Exposed fastener panel saves money and gives you several hundred rubber washers that are all aging in Texas sun. Exposed fastener belongs on barns, shops and outbuildings.

Vetting A Metal Installer In Texas

Texas has no state license for roofing contractors. Anyone can print cards and buy a brake, and metal is where that shows up fastest, because standing seam is unforgiving. Panels have to be allowed to move as they heat and cool, clips have to be right for the profile, and a panel fastened tight at both ends will oil can or tear a hole at the fastener within a few seasons.

So ask specific questions. Which panel profile and gauge, and who manufactures it. Is the panel roll formed on site or shop formed. What is the clip spacing at the eave against the ridge. Who does the flashing at the chimney and the sidewall, since that is where a shingle crew attempting metal gives itself away. Then ask for a metal job in the Metroplex you can go look at from the street. We would rather answer all of that than be compared on price alone.
